Somente em 1909, foi alçado à categoria de cidade. A sua história remonta ao coronelismo e ao ciclo do diamante na Bahia.

A Cachoeira do Ferro Doido fica localizada a 19,3 km de Morro do Chapéu, no Parque Estadual do Morro do Chapéu. É conhecida como uma das mais altas da Chapada Diamantina, com 98 metros de altura.
O acesso para a parte superior da cachoeira é muito fácil. São apenas 5 minutos de caminhada em terreno plano, além disso, para os mais aventureiros, existe uma trilha que pode ser feita a pé até a parte de baixo da cachoeira (são cerca de 30 minutos de caminhada). Esta trilha, no entanto, tem de ser feita com guia.
